Developer work station
Having an organized computer with all the cool software within reach will surely boost your productivity whether you are making that next big mobile app or you have a tight deadline in putting together a functional website. But if you still feel that there is need for improvement, you may have to evaluate the hardware on your desk. Here are some of the hardware that developers can greatly benefit from.
A Second Screen
It is debatable as to whether or not a dual-screen configuration ramps up your productivity but when it comes to coding, adding a second screen on your desk will undoubtedly save time and frustration. This simply allows you to use your favorite development tool in full screen so you can see more lines of code and have a separate screen for something else. This could be an active browser where you can conveniently see the output of a webpage you are designing without interrupting your progress or you can leave a file manager open in case you need to drag files and resources to your workspace. Dell monitors and Apple Thunderbolt displays are good choices.
A Better Keyboard
Having that strong passion of coding is good as it encourages you to type fast and possibly even master all those keyboard shortcuts. But even if you are so used to coding, you could do your hands a big favor by getting a better keyboard. There are several routes you can go if you know you are currently using a budget keyboard. You can take the ergonomic route for a more comfortable typing experience or you can shoot for a mechanical keyboard (Cherry MX Blue or Brown switches) which should vastly increase your WPM at the expense of louder typing sounds. If you don’t have huge budget, the least you can do is get a keyboard with a nice palm rest.
