The biggest improvement to note is the easy upgrade from Drupal 8 to Drupal 9. Both of these versions 8 and 9 contain the same features and code. Main difference is that Drupal 9, or D9 as it is referred to in the industry, removed deprecated code and updated third-party dependencies. If you find yourself running on version 7 of Drupal, you can absolutely upgrade directly to D9 and skip D8 altogether. The rebuild would likely take the form of an entirely brand new website, but the benefits of going right to D9 are two-fold. First avoiding end of life issues for D8 in 2022 and jumping on a platform that will enable to you go headless. Some key improvements to note:
- Moving from Symfony 3 to Symfony 4.4
- Turning Olivero, the much-talked-about front-end theme, into Drupal’s new default theme.
- Upgrading from CKEditor 4 to 5, from Twig 1 to 2.
- Keeping Drupal 7 and Drupal 8 supported, alongside Drupal 9, for almost 1.5 years after Drupal 9’s release.
These upgrades can only translate into higher performance, improved developer experience, and enhanced security. With all deprecated functionality getting removed by the time Drupal 9 gets released, its load of dependencies will get significantly lighter. Nothing new in Drupal 9 shared opinion is not fully accurate. If we compared this upgrade to the previous one, all these mind-shifts and new approaches in Drupal 9 are not necessarily painfully disruptive changes no new dramatic paradigms of development.
