Cross Browser Testing

Every website owner will one day or another run into browser related issues. It could be a simple thing such as the navigation menu running over text. Cross browser testing is the practice of making sure that the existing websites work across an acceptable number of web browsers. This can include Chrome, Firefox, Safari and Internet Explorer, among some other internet browsers as well. It is the web developer’s responsibility to make sure that it works across majority of popular browsers, unless of course some browsers are not update or supported anymore. There are many tools that can be used as well for testing purposes.

Cross browser issues can occur for a number of reasons. Sometimes browsers have bugs or implement features differently. Even the smallest of new changes implemented on your website can cause an issue somehow if not done and tested properly. As well some browsers may have different levels of support for technology features to others. These issues and bugs can be fixed in almost all scenarios. The most popular browsers will have great support, with regular updates. So the developer should have no reason not to be able to fix issues. Unless of course there is no support, and an solution cannot be found.

If you are planning to do some testing yourself, there is lots of software that makes it easy. Software such as browserstack is great for both developers and website owners (non developers) as well. Browserstack is live web-based browser testing software that gives you instant access to all real mobile and desktop browsers. Of course if you’re counting on your developer, they should have the proper tools in place.  By thoroughly testing your website in as many browsers as possible, you are eliminating the possibility of a lost visitor or shopper due to an easily corrected bug. If testing time is limited, review analytics and evaluate the amount of traffic the website is getting from various browsers.
